Hays. 3 pp, on 4-page lettersheet. Signed by Hays, notary public Julius K. Rosel, county recorder John A. McGlyn, and witnesses B.F. Hardy and Wm. B. Beatty. (Wrinkled and stained). Feb. 26, 1851. * A.L.s. to Col. Jack Hays from an A. Bill, regarding “some hogs I had left at the Abbey Hotel & which by mistake has been lived (?) on as another man’s property… I will make if you require it an affidavit tomorrow and bring proof if you wish…” March 24, 1851. * Two partially printed documents under Hays’ name as sheriff, authorizing the sale for unpaid taxes of parcels of land in San Francisco. Signed by Hays. 1852. * Two partially printed documents under Hays’ name as sheriff, authorizing the sale for unpaid taxes of parcels of land in San Francisco. Signed for Hays by under sheriff John Caperton. 1853. * Manuscript judicial order for sale of property in San Francisco, resulting from a judgment in the case of Matias Alsua vs. Charles V. Gillespie. April 8, 1851. * Similar document from the case of Henry P. Hoyt against James F. Atwood, in which John C. Hays apparently had funds belonging to Atwood, and was ordered not to dispose of them. Signed by Justice of the Peace H.S. Brown. Oct. 23, 1850. * Manuscript letter from the Superior Court of San Francisco to Hays, now the former sheriff and collector of taxes, stating that Hays had in his possession $7,115.00 that he had collected and not turned over to the city, and requesting same. With a later note by the District Attorney stating that Hays had paid the money. July 7, 1853. * Two partially printed documents under Thomas C. Johnson’s name as “late sheriff of the County of San Francisco,” authorizing the sale for unpaid taxes of parcels of land in San Francisco. Signed by Johnson. 1854. * Plus several related documents. Interesting archive relating to early San Francisco justice, and the former Texas Ranger John Coffee Hays, who was elected Sheriff of San Francisco in 1850, was appointed U.S. Surveyor General in 1853, helped found the city of Oakland, California, and was successful in real estate and ranching.
