Matthew H. Hopkins was born in Savannah in 1837. As news of secession was reaching the region and rumors of the coming war were swirling around, he joined the 18th GA State Battalion, receiving a commission in late Feb. 1861. As the war erupted and continued past its Christmas "deadline" (the war is always supposed to be "over by Christmas"), Hopkins transferred with a commission to his friend Charles Olmstead's 1st GA Infantry in January 1862. (Note to Civil War researchers, there were numerous units known at one time or another as the 1st Georgia Infantry. This was often known as Olmstead's Regiment.) Included in this lot are: The marriage certificate of Matthew Hopkins and Margaret B. McConky, 16 Nov. 1825. Will of Matthew Hopkins, leaving his property to his wife, Margaret, and 4 children, Mary B., Anna M., John D. and Matthew H. Dated 3 Dec. 1848, and executed at his death in 1889. Mourning Ribbon, 2.5 x 8.5 in. In Memory of Alexander H. Stephens, Governor of Georgia, Citizen, Augusta, GA. with albumen image of Stephens affixed to circle in center of ribbon. Alexander Stephens was Vice President of the Confederate States of America 1861 – 1865, and Governor of Georgia 1882-1883. He also represented Georgia’s 8th district before (1843-1859) and after (1873-1882) the war. Receipt from The Ladies’ Southern Aid Association, printed on back of a cdv (2.5 x 4 in.) of Jefferson Davis, for $1 to aid the Davis family. Confederate bond, for $500, No. 941 issued 4 Sept. 1862. Issue of 19 Aug. 1861. With 4 coupons clipped, 20 remaining. Verso with penciled “C. Hopkins.” 6 x 6.5 in. receipt for Mrs. Hopkins, Jan. 9, 1865, (pd. Jan. 17), for 512 lbs pork at $2 per pound, and 48 gals. syrup at $7 / gal. for a total of $1360 (Confederate?). It would appear that inflation was in full swing. Pork should have been much less (it was selling for $25 – 35 bbl. in CA in 1849, when demand was high from gold miners - figuring 200 lbs. in a barrel, one gets 12.5 to 17.5 cents per pound). Deed for sale of land to Matthew Hopkins in Louisville, Jefferson Co., GA, 1 Feb. 1876. Signed by Charles Olmstead (and others) as an executor of the will of John D. Hopkins, Matthew’s brother (?). Plus a later photograph of Hopkins, ca 1900.
