Luigi Rossini (Italian, 1790-1857). An elephant folio portfolio containing 145 large Roman architectural etched views, comprised of two title pages including Le Antichita Dei Contorni di Roma and Le Antichita a di Preneste e del Tusculo; 138 etched plates; and 5 plans entitled La Creduta Villa di Mecenate Ma Foro coi suoi Edifici Annessi, Elio Adriana Imperatore, Ristauro della Villa di C Cassio, Scavi Fatti al Tusculo sino all' Anno 1826, and Ristauro del Tempio della Fortuna Prenestina; each sheet 30.75 x 21.75 in., portfolio size 32 x 22 in. Defective, as described below, but still an impressive collection of the work of this great artist. Condition: Significant damage to the portfolio case: the binding is completely torn resulting in the front and back covers to be separated. The 145 plates show edgewear and handling wear. Many of the etchings, but not the majority, show old dampstaining in the margins -- rarely affecting the actual images. The etchings are strong and richly toned. In spite of the staining and damage and edgewear this is a wonderful collection of 145 oversized views of Roman scenes and buildings by this student of Piranesi -- and one of the great artistic chroniclers of Rome.
