Historical details on the development and construction of the Apollo Command and Service Modules by NASA and North American Aviation are presented in this NASA Special Publication. The flight profile changes to Lunar Orbit Rendezvous assisted Grumman Aircraft and Engineering Corporation of Bethpage, Long Island, New York to win the Lunar Module (LM) contract. The problems of recovering from the Apollo 1 spacecraft fire needed to be addressed, prompting the corrections required to enable the first unmanned test of the LM on Apollo 5 and the first manned flight of Apollo 7, to be followed by the LM on Apollo 9.
