[Apollo 15] Portrait of James Irwin near the first Lunar Rover and the LM Falcon at Hadley Base, EVA 1. David Scott, 26 July - 7 August 1971, EVA 1. Printed 1971. Vintage chromogenic print on fiber-based Kodak paper [NASA image AS15–86-11601]. 20.3×25.4 cm (8×10 in), with “A Kodak Paper” watermarks on the verso, numbered “NASA AS15–86-11601” in red in top margin (NASA Manned Spacecraft Center, Houston, Texas). Literature: Spacecam: Photographing the Final Frontier from Apollo to Hubble, Hope, pg. 28 (variant); Apollo: The Epic Journey to the Moon, Reynolds, pg. 177 (variant). A great and very rare photograph of James Irwin facing his photographer next to the Lunar Rover parked near the LM Falcon at Hadley Base with St George Crater in the background. Footprints and Rover tracks are in the foreground. On Apollo 15 the Lunar Rover enabled the first true scientific exploration of the Moon, allowing Scott and Irwin to cover a greater distance and collect a greater variety of geological samples than accomplished on the three previous lunar landings combined. “We were a base... I mean, if we’d had more oxygen and more food and more water in the LM, we could’ve stayed there. Nothing wore out... The rover’s still good. You could go out there and start it up right now. So, we had a lunar base established.” David Scott (Chaikin, Voices, p. 192). Condition Glossy print in excellent condition.
