[Apollo 11] The first departure for the surface of another world: Michael Collins’ final preparations for launch. NASA, 16 July 1969. Printed 1969. Vintage gelatin silver print on fiber-based paper [NASA image 69-H-1129]. 20.3×25.4 cm (8×10 in), with NASA caption numbered “69-H-1129” and “108-KSC-69P-615" on the verso (NASA Headquarters, Washington, D.C.). The photograph shows Michael Collins’ tension before boarding the giant Saturn V rocket at Launch Complex 39A. Apollo 11 mission was the dramatic end to a massive effort. Though trained to be self-reliant, the crew had the support of a huge team. Altogether it took the work of some 350,000 people to launch their mission.
