APIANUS, Petrus (1495-1552). Cosmographia, sive descriptio universi orbis ... Adjecti sunt alii ... tractatus ac libelli varii , Antwerp: Jean Withaye for Joannes Beller, 1584. 4° (227 x 164mm). Four diagrams with volvelles, p.22 with string pointer, woodcut vignette on title page, repeated on p.46, numerous woodcut illustrations and diagrams, including folding woodcut map after Gemma Frisius, woodcut head and tail-pieces and initials. (Browned in sections, small burnhole affecting 2 words on p.191, some spotting and minor wormholes). 17th-century limp vellum with two fore-edge ties. (One partly missing). Cosmographia was Apianus's first major work, consolidating his reputation as an excellent mathematician and pioneer of astronomical and geographical instrumentation. This version of Cosmographia , as modified by Gemma Frisius, became one of the most popular books of the time and was translated into all the major European languages. As a result of the success of this and previous works, Apianus was appointed Professor of Mathematics at the University of Inglostadt and also received a knighthood from Charles V. Adams-1286; van Ortroy, Apian 59; Wellcome 346.
