Beschreibung:

Albumen photograph, 7.5 x 9 in., on 10 x 14 in. mount with the F.V. Hayden Geological Survey imprint at top and manuscript title at bottom, "Peaches. Gen. Crook's guide." Although lacking a photographer's imprint, this portrait was likely produced by either A. Frank Randall or Ben Wittick, who are both credited with taking an almost identical photograph of Peaches in the same studio setting. Ca 1883. An unusually large photograph of Peaches, typically encountered as a cabinet card, showing the subject holding a Frank Wesson rifle and carrying an 1875 Remington revolver in his holster. Peaches, also known as Tzoeh, was General George Crook's most distinguished scout that served during the campaign of 1883, leading US troops to the Chiricahua hideout in the Sierra Madre mountains of Mexico. It is not clear how this photograph came to be published on the Hayden Expedition mount, as Hayden's last expedition took place in 1878 and this image was produced ca 1883, after Peaches started working as Crook's guide. Condition: Very good overall. Some minor staining and few surface abrasions to mount, which appears to have been trimmed.
