AN OLD BABYLONIAN HAEMATITE CYLINDER SEAL CIRCA 1900-1700 B.C. With the sun-god, Shamash, in ascending posture holding his saw-toothed knife, being approached by a male worshipper holing an ibex, followed by another worshipper between two suppliant goddesses, a crescent, star, dwarf, ball-and-staff in the field, 1 in. (2.6 cm.) high; another, mottled red and black stone, with Shamash brandishing his knife, being approached by a suppliant worshipper and goddess, 11/8 in. (2.8 cm.) high; another, black stone, with two facing deified figures and a frontally facing nude goddess, infill motifs include a crescent, monkey, ball-and-staff and vessel, a two line cuneiform inscription reads "Shamash and Aya" (the sun god and his consort), edge chip, 1 in. (2.6 cm.) high; another mottled red and white stone, with a suppliant figure and inscription naming the owner "Sin-magir, son of Waklum, servant of (the god) Shamash", 16 in. (2.9 cm.) high; another, haematite, a king before a suppliant, a frontal nude goddess and a dwarf, ¾ in. (1.9 cm.) high; another, haematite, two suppliants before a king, star, monkey, human head, quadruped, lion-headed staff and crescent in the field, 5/8 in. (1.5 cm.) high, all 1900-1700 B.C.; an Akkadian black stone cylinder seal with a hero between two horned animals each being attacked by lions, circa 2300-2200 B.C., 16 in. (2.7 cm.) high; and a Syrian or North Mesopotamian quartzite cylinder seal with a genie in contest with a human-headed winged bull, crescent and star above, circa 900-700 B.C., 1 in.
