An interesting mid 19th-Century French drawing set, a gilt stamp in the lid for LEREBOURS & SECRETAN OPTICIENS DE S.M. L'EMPEREUR MAGASINS Place du Pont Neuf 15 ATELIER Rue de l'Est 25 PARIS , a hinged cushion in the lid concealing a synthetic protractor and lignum vitae curve, with three fitted trays, the upper containing twenty-two ( of thirty-two ) various instruments including an ivory-handled double-pen, folding dividers, a large pair of three-legged dividers, a concertina metre rule in thin brass, an ivorine-mounted thermometer stamped SECRETAN A PARIS in a brass tube and other items, the second tray containing a brass folding square, a brass sector, a boxwood sliding rule, an ivorine rule, an ivorine and ebony rolling rule, two brass pencil mounts and a brass-cased pocket compass, the lower tray containing paint pots, brush and paint, all lined in green plush and silk, contained in a mahogany-veneered case with ebony stringing to the lid and an oval brass plaque reading Offert par le Ministre de la Marine et des Colonies M.F.M. Kinley Esq. chief engineer and inspector of machinery. Bombay pour services rendus à Marine imperial 1863 -- 36.8 x 23.3 x 9cm. (14½ x 9 1/8 x 3½in.) , with an undated contemporaneous newspaper cutting regarding the presentation of set through the secretary of state for India
