During its most influential period it was the governing body for almost all courses in the sub-continent and played an important role in helping to define and apply the rules that governed the sport. A testimony to the importance of the RCTC was that the races it organised, each opened by the Viceroy of India, were among the most important social events of the calendar year. During the 1930s, the Calcutta Derby Sweeps, organised by the club, was the largest sweepstake in the world. Still in existence today, the private club operates the Kolkata Race Course.
