An important large black stone figure of Buddha Northeastern India, Bihar, early Pala Period, 7th/8th century Standing on a rectangular plinth with his hands in varada and vitarka mudras and holding the tip of his robe, wearing a long flowing diaphanous robe with undulating hemlines, the face with a benevolent expression with full lips, heavy lidded almond-shaped eyes, surmounted by tightly curled hair with domed ushnisha , the arched backplate inscribed along the edge and down the right side with a Buddhist creed, with a small figure of Maitreya distinguished by a stupa in his headdress kneeling beside him at his right, the stone with a smooth finish 42½ in. (108 cm.) high
