An Important Double Portrait Thangka of the Second and Third Taklung Abbot, Rinchen Gonpo and Sangye Yarjon Central Tibet, Second Half 13th Century Depicting the monks Rinchen Gonpo (also known as Kuyelwa and Ratnanatha, 1191-1236) and his successor as abbot of the Taklung monastery, Sangye Yarjön (also known as Prajnaguru, 1203-72), seated opposite each other in discourse on lotus thrones within mountainous caves formed by multi-colored rock arches, wearing voluminous robes decorated with diaper patterns outlined in gold, surmounted by a register depicting Prajnaparamita, the Five Tathagatas and Shadakshari, the rockwork interspersed with four images of Mahasiddhas Dombi Heruka, Tilopa, Naropa and Kukkuripa, a further register at the lower rim with a sacrificient holding an incense burner facing two monks, likely the Taklung progenitors Phagmodrupa and Tashipel, followed by Vajrasattva, Manjushri, Vajrapani, and Green Tara, inscribed on the reverse with mantras outlining a stupa and naming the subjects of the portraits 19¾ x 16¼ in. (50 x 41 cm.)
