AN IMPERIAL MANDATE WITH REIGNAL DATE, QIANLONG, 42ND YEAR, CORRESPONDING TO 1777 AND OF THE PERIOD Silk brocade mounted on paper in handscroll format, composed of panels of varying colors including orange, cream, vermillion, mauve and brown, all woven with a pattern of evenly spaced clouds, the text painted in vertical lines in black, red, white, yellow and gold in kaishu and repeated in Manchurian script with a mandate giving title to an official of Mongolia or Manchuria, with two large seals in cinnabar reading zi gao zhi bao (mandate seal), the end sections of the scroll woven with pairs of dragons confronting four-character inscriptions repeated in both scripts, which translate as 'Imperial Mandate'--133 x 12 3/8in.
