An Extremely Rare Cased Pair Of Presentation 20-Bore Saw-Handled Duelling Pistols Made To Be Used With Either Flint Or Percussion Cap By Williams & Powell, Makers To The Duke Of Gloucester, Circa 1833With rebrowned twist octagonal sighted barrels each with silver bead fore-sight, signed in full in part gothic letters along the top flat and with two gold lines around the back-sight, border engraved case-hardened breeches each engraved with foliate scrollwork, inlaid V-shaped gold line, threaded nipple and platinum-lined touch-hole, border engraved case-hardened tangs decorated with scrolling foliage, signed border engraved case-hardened flat detented locks decorated with two forms of scrolling foliage, cocks and hammers en suite, the flintlock mechanisms each with rainproof pan and roller, engraved blued safety-catches, figured half-stocks each with grooved spur, chequered rounded butts each with flat ovoidal pommel encircled by an engraved silver band and set with an oval silver plaque engraved 'R.W. Pooler Jr. To J.H. Nickerson' around a spray of foliage, blued steel spur trigger-guards each with scrolling foliage on the border engraved bow, blued trigger-plates each with pineapple-shaped finial en suite, blued set triggers, circular vacant silver escutcheon on each side flat, silver barrel-bolt escutcheons, foliate scroll engraved silver fore-end caps, original brass-mounted ramrods, and much original finish: in original lined and fitted mahogany case with accessories including brass-mounted three-way powder-flask with adjustable nozzle and covered in red leather, the interior of the lid with maker's trade label (minor tear), the exterior with brass plate incorporating a flush-fitting brass carrying handle, Birmingham proof marks 21.5 cm. barrels FootnotesWilliams & Powell are recorded at 10 Pool Lane, Liverpool in 1833 For a related double-barrelled sporting gun by Thomas Mortimer (no. 4230, circa 1820) see Christie's London, Fine Antique Firearms from the W.
