AN EXTREMELY RARE CARVED POLYCHROME LACQUER 'TOY PEDDLER' CIRCULAR DISH JIAJING SIX-CHARACTER MARK AND OF THE PERIOD (1522-1566) The large circular dish is crisply carved through red and green layers of lacquer depicting an elaborate scene with a street vendor carrying a portable rack containing various types of toys, surrounded by eight children at play or strolling towards the toy peddler, under the shade of a tree bearing peaches, against two diaper grounds, one of a wavy pattern and the other of diamond shape. The cavetto is adorned with four striding dragons amidst ruyi clouds, the other side with a leafy lingzhi scroll, and the foot encircled by a band of keyfret. The red base is incised and gilt with a six-character Jiajing mark. 12 3/4 in. (32.2 cm.) diam., Japanese wood box
