An exhibition quality 5 inch gauge model of a Great Northern Railway Stiring Single 4-2-2 live steam tender locomotive No 53, The model built by John Richardson of Halifax, circa 1983, from works drawings and photographs. The brazed silver soldered copper superheated boiler having back-head fittings including steam pressure gauge, water sight-glass, safety, blower, twin injectors, clack and blowdown valves, twin handled regulator, direction control, cab operated drain cocks, hinged G.N.R pattern firebox door and simulated wooden plank flooring. The chassis with twin outside cylinders and Stephensons internal link gear, drain cocks and linkage, crosshead with bronze slippers, detailed big ends, ratchet operated lubricator, brake and sanding gear, whistle and fine rivet detail. Further details include dummy ash-pan and damper controls, brake valve and ejector, vacuum gauge, wooden cab floor, steps, hand and lamp irons and steel and oak buffer beam. The six wheel tender with fitted hand operated feed pump, hand operated brake gear, water cocks, dummy well tank, hand rails and steps. The model finished in traditional G.N.R green and black lined livery and being of early design with fretwork splashers, oval makers plate, fitted couplings, hand-rails and steps. The locomotive has not been steamed since painting. The original full size locomotive was designed by Patrick Stirling, built in 1875, rebuilt in 1888 and withdrawn from service in 1906. Length 142cm. Cab width 35cm. Purchased at Christies in August 1986 by Lord Braybrooke. The model won a Silver Medal at the Model Engineer exhibition Wembley in 1983.
