An early 17th century embroidered and stumpwork panel, depicting Rebekah at the Well, giving a drink from a ewer to a weary traveller, the ground ... with rabbit, stag, toad, butterflies, insects, trees and foliage, in silk on a satin ground and worked in relief, enriched with sequins, coral, lapis lazuli, mica, coloured threads, chenille and raised work, 52cm x 59cm, framed, first half of 17th century The story of Rebekah. Abraham's faithful servant was sent into Mesopotamia to find a wife for Isaac, his son, from people of his own race, not from the Canaanites, amongst whom Abraham lived. At the city, Nahor, Abraham's brother, encountered Rebekah and was given by her a drink from the well. She dispensed it from a jar on her shoulder. Abraham's servant knew immediately that Rebekah was the woman God had prepared for Isaac, and so gave her a gold nose ring and two bracelets, and brought her to Abraham, all as described in Genesis 24.
