AN APULIAN RED-FIGURE PELIKE ATTRIBUTED TO THE WORKSHOP OF THE DARIUS PAINTER LATE 4TH CENTURY B.C. Side A: with nuptial scene, the young seated couple in the centre, the lady wearing white shoes and carrying a xylophone on her lap and holding wreath above their heads, flanked at either side by standing female attendants, carrying an oinochoe, fan, mirror and fillet, Aphrodite is seated above to the left, carrying a casket and magic wheel, turned back towards the winged figure of Eros who plays with a bird and carries a fillet, surmounted by a band of palmettes and egg and dot motif across the neck Side B: a female seated on a rocky outcrop in the centre, carrying wreath and mirror, turned back towards a standing naked youth carrying strigil in his right hand and with his staff and cloak over his left arm, wearing a white fillet in his hair, on the other side a standing female attendant figure carrying casket, a hanging fillet above, a band of laurel with central rosette, and a band of wave across the neck Elaborate palmettes below each handle, with an encircling band of meander interspersed with quartered squares below the scenes, details in added white and yellow 17¼ in. (44 cm.) high
