AMUNDSEN, ROALD, Norwegian explorer, navigated Northwest Passage. Album of original photographs of Amundsen's stay in Alaska, l906, upon the completion of the first successful voyage through the Northwest passage. l01 photographs, most 196 x 247mm. (7 11/16 x 9 ll/16), a few smaller, plus 1) a three-part panoramic view of Nome from the harbor, 194 x 1294mm. (7 5/8 x 60 7/16 in.), that view pieced together from six separate photographs, 2) a framed portrait of Amundsen, seated, 227 x 170mm. (6 ll/16 x 9 in.) with margins, in its original wooden frame; the others pasted neatly into an album, oblong 4to, old paper boards, edges worn, the contents in fine condition, ONE PORTRAIT OF AMUNDSEN BOLDLY SIGNED, as is another of Lieutenant Hanson, Amundsen's principal officer. AMUNDSEN IN ALASKA, L906, AFTER NAVIGATING THE NORTHWEST PASSAGE A highly unusual record of the conclusion of one of Amundsen's greatest triumphs as an explorer. His ship, the "Gjoa" departed from Christiania, Norway and in a torturous three-year odyssey sucessfully navigated the Northwest Passage, the first time this had been achieved. In addition, Amundsen fixed the position of the North Magnetic Pole. He and his ship returned to civilization when the anchored at Nome, Alaska Territory, on 31 August l906, where they received a rousing welcome from the frontier town's officials and residents alike. A number of the photographs (including the fine panoramic view of Nome and the framed portrait of the explorer) bear the credit line of F.W. Nowell of Nome, Alaska; many of these also display full English captions at bottom of the image. Captions include: "Capt. Amundsen & Lieut. Hansen, on the day which marks their return to Civilization, at Nome, Alaska, Sept. 1, l906. America's first greeting, her first reception Committee, and Prominent Nomeites in Background"; "Deck of Capt. Amundsen's Ship 'Gjoa'; "Capt. Amundsen arrives in Nome, Aug. 31, l906, on his ship...after 3 years in Arctic"; "Bessie Mine...Nome, Alaska, May 27, l906"; "First Lighter Landing from Steamer 'Ohio'; "Breakfast given to Capt. Amundsen...Royal Cafe, Nome"; etc. Uncaptioned views depict gold-mining operations, a Public School building, Post Office, the "Golden North Hotel," Amundsen in a kayak, "Cracker Jack's" and "The Bowhead" (both saloons), the "Keewalik Hotel," a wooden church, views of the coastline, portraits of Eskimo families, homes and Eskimo burial structures.
