AMSTERDAM 1642 -- NOLPE, Pieter. Beschrivinge vande Blyde Inkoomste, Rechten van Zeege-bogen en ander toestel op de Wel-koomste van Haare Majesteyt van Groot-Britanien, Vrankryk, en Jerland. Tot Amsterdam, Den 20 May, 1642 . Amsterdam: Nicolaes van Ravesteyn for Pieter Nolpe 1642. Large 2 o (423 x 265 mm). 11 engraved plates (6 double-page allegorical plates and one large folding view of Amsterdam) by PIETER NOLPE after P. POTTER and others (some dampstaining, one with a small repair at center fold). (Some dampstaining, a few minor marginal repairs, text block cracked with a few quires becoming loose.) Contemporary Dutch vellum over pasteboard. Provenance : Miss Sarah Sophia Banks (1744-1818), sister of Sir Joseph Banks (signature at head of dedication "S.S. Banks" dated 1813). Fête book commemorating the 1642 entry into Amsterdam of HENRIETTA MARIA (1609-1669), Queen Consort of Charles I, King of England and Scotland. Henrietta Maria, was Princess of France and Queen Consort of England, Scotland and Ireland (13 June 1625 - 30 January 1649) through her marriage to Charles I. She was the mother of two kings, Charles II and James II, and was grandmother to Mary II, William III, and Anne of Great Britain. Henriette-Marie de France was born the daughter of King Henry IV of France and his second wife, Marie de Medici. As the Civil War approached, Henrietta Maria began to meddle in politics. She sought without success to instigate a military coup to overthrow the Parliamentarians, and her efforts to enlist support for the king from the pope, the French, and the Dutch infuriated many Englishmen. When war broke out in August 1642, she was in the Netherlands raising funds for her husband. The plates depict allegorical scenes, triumphal arches created for the celebration, and a large view of Amsterdam. S.S. Banks's collection of theatrical ephemera containing playbills, broadsides, notices and press-cuttings dealing with private theatrical performances, dating from 1750 to 1808, was presented to the British Museum Library on her death in 1818. Ruggieri 1088; Vinet 746; Watanabe 2677 (10 engravings only, without view of Amsterdam).
