Beschreibung:

Very good condition Ames 1832 artillery short sword. Used by foot artiilerymen and also for a time by infantry NCOs. Brass hilt Roman style short sword with heavy double edged blade. Blade is marked United States 1833 and with an eagle over NP Ames / Springfield on either ricasso. Hilt is correctly marked by S. Huse / Newburyport on the underside of the crossguard along with an inspector's stamp in oval cartouche. Belt is regulation white buff with two-piece US/cannon and eagle sections with S-link. CONDITION: hilt has medium patina with good detail to the cast eagle in the pommel. Blade and hilt stamps are sharp. Blade is bright with some scattered grey and half a dozen shallow edge nicks. Scabbard is solid. Some unevenness to the finish. Mounts in place. Minor age spotting. dent to drag. Drag a bit loose and rubbing finish along top edge. Belt is minty and shows very clear R. Dingee maker's mark. A nice early dated example of this regulation sword, showing the Huse made hilt used by Ames in early production. (SR). PROVENANCE: From the Collection of George M. Rapport.
