MAP OF THE STATE OF KENTUCKY WITH THE ADJOINING TERRITORIES. BY J. RUSSELL, 1794. London: Published as the Act Directs, Dec. 27, 1794 by H.D. Symonds, No. 20 Paternoster Row. An important and attractive map of Kentucky published only two years after statehood. The map also shows pre-statehood Tennessee, described here as "South Western Territory," and also the Northwest Territory here labeled "North Western Territory." The map includes topographical and geographical details and shows rivers, streams, roads, "traces," etc. Kentucky is described by ten different counties. To the north Fort Washington is included at the confluence of the Little Miami and Ohio Rivers but there is no mention of either Losantville or Cincinnati. An area south of the Cumberland River and near Nashville is labeled: "Reserved for the North Carolina Troops." Also depicted are the northern portions of both Georgia and South Carolina. The map is matted and framed - image size is approximately 18 by 15 inches. There is attractive hand coloring which is "early," but probably not contemporary with publication. Winterbotham's View of the United States. Phillips, Maps, p. 350. Condition: The map has had considerable restoration with a couple lengthy "closed" tears and some neat repairs to the folds. There are also some areas of foxing/staining - but it is still an attractive map. Not examined outside of the frame.
