AMERICAN THEATER] Collection of nineteenth century photographs of actors and actresses , comprising approximately 275 albumen prints mounted four to a page to the recto and verso of loose card album sheets. The photographs mostly 5 1/2 x 4 inches (14.5 x 11 cm), many of the mounted images with inked names identifying the sitters, a few loose photographs with penciled names to the verso. The endpaper of the album providing the provenance "Miss E.V. Johnson/stirpes/Anna Johnson or/Octavia ... Johnson/2131 Lucas Place/Saint Louis." The original album covers present but defective, the mounts brittle and worn with discolor and losses affecting the images, show through of adhesive and foxing, an interesting collection that should be seen and is worthy of future research but sold as is. This album, was assembled by the daughters of Dr. John B. Johnson of the fashionable Lucas Place in St. Louis, contains many photographs of late 19th century theater stars, many of them depicted in costume. Identified portraits include those of Edwin Booth, Lillian Russell, Junius Brutus Booth, E. H. Sothern, many of Ada Rehan (one inscribed), Julia Marlowe, Lillie Langtry Ellen Terry and others. C
