Beschreibung:

(American Revolution)In Assembly, Tuesday, December 2d, 1783 A.M. The Report of the Committee, Read November 29th, Relative to the Preparations to be Made for Public Demonstrations of Joy. [Philadelphia: Printed by Thomas Bradford, 1783] Broadside (259 x 200 mm). Two lines of heading, text in two columns; scattered foxing, remnant of mat hinge, tiny marginal loss from removal of a second hinge. Half brown morocco slipcase gilt, chemise. A rare and evocative broadside printing the instructions and specifications for the construction of a triumphal arch in Philadelphia to celebrate the Treaty of Paris, which concluded the Revolutionary War and recognized the United States as an independent nation. The broadside also describes the plans for the celebration to be held when the arch was completed, including a parade and fireworks, This resolution was passed by the Pennsylvania Assembly just as the British were evacuating New York City and little more than a week prior to Washington's resignation as commander in chief. Charles Willson Peale was commissioned to design and erect the arch, "decorated with symbols and mottoes worthy of patriot heroes and citizens. On January 22, 1784, the ratification of the treaty was proclaimed and celebrated. But a careless bombardier discharges his gun too soon or aimed too low, sparks fell on Peale's arch of triumph and peace, and moments before it was to be illuminated in victory, it was consumed in fiery conflagration" (A Rising People, p. 193). This accident occurred despite a warning issued at the bottom of the broadside: "Any Boys or others, who disturb the Citizens by throwing Squibs or Crackers, or otherwise, will be immediately apprehended and sent to the Work-house." REFERENCE Celebration of My Country 99; ESTC W23371; Evans 18092; Hildeburn 4306
