CGC certified: F/VF (7.0). Off-white pages. Not cleaned and pressed. Cover: John Romita pencils and inks. Story: Stan Lee and John Romita. John Romita pencils and inks. Lettering: Artie Simek. GPAnalysis: A 7.0 sold for $72 in 8/22. The Prowler, whose full-face mask conceals his blackness, functions thematically as a sort of race-reversed Spidey surrogate. Just as no one can tell the Prowler's ethnicity under his mask, so too does Spidey's full-face mask ensure that nobody can tell if he's white, black, or even a nice Jewish boy from Queens ("Spidey experts have suggested that Stan Lee, who co-created Spider-Man with Steve Ditko coded Spider-Man as Jewish by having him hail from the historically Jewish neighborhood of Forest Hills, Queens." — P.J. Grisar, "Is Spider-Man Jewish?" Forward.com, Dec. 17, 2018). Subtextually, this racial ambiguity may help to explain why the public mistrusts Spidey but embraces heroes who show some skin ("I don't get it! How do OTHER superhuman guys, like the Fantastic Four and the Ant Man, get away with it?? Nobody bothers THEM!"). The Prowler's status as a kind of black Spidey stand-in would be underscored decades later by black Spidey Miles Morales, who's uncle is the "Ultimates" version of the Prowler.
