ALKEN, Henry. The National Sports of Great Britain . London: Thomas M'Lean, 1825 [plates dated 1824 and with Whatman 1823 watermark]. 8° (255 x 162mm). 50 hand-coloured etched plates, signed 'Hy. Alken, Delt,' with tissue guards. (A few spots and light dust marks to plates and plate margins, offsetting to guards, text lightly browned throughout.) Contemporary hard-grained black morocco gilt, gilt edges (rubbed, front inner hinges split). FIRST EDITION WITH THESE ILLUSTRATIONS. Despite having the same title as the folio of 1821, this work -- published at three guineas -- contains a different series of plates, some drawn from earlier works. 'Alken himself seems to have drawn in colours and engraved the plates,' notes Schwerdt, 'which like most of his book illustrations are peculiarly pleasing on account of their small size ... The preface deals with, and condemns, the prevailing practice of baiting animals, although the last three plates depict various forms of this barbarous sport'. Melon/Podeschi 121; Schwerdt I, p. 20; Siltzer p. 72; Tooley 43.
