ALKEN, Henry. Panorama of the Progress of Human Life ... giving at the same time ... the Field Sports of the English People. London: S. and J. Fuller, 20 April 1820. Hand-coloured aquatint panorama after Alken (67 x 4550mm. overall) showing 35 scenes, round engraved title label on verso of first scene. (First scene browned and damaged with slight loss at corner, slight damage to title label causing loss to date, clean 10mm. tear in second scene, some light browning at margins, a few old repairs at joints). In contemporary boxwood roller with varnished hand-coloured label reading 'The Review London published by J. Hudson 85 Cheapside' (label slightly rubbed, lacks wooden bar at start). Provenance : C.F.G.R. Schwerdt (his sale, 19 June 1939, lot 52?; lot no. preserved on base) -- Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester (his sale, Christie's London, 26-27 January 2006, lot 699). AN ATTRACTIVE AND AMUSING PANORAMA. Many scenes are 'miniature adaptions' of plates in National Field Sports. Maclay identified the Schwerdt copy as being housed in the wrong roller, bearing the title 'The Review'. Abbey Life 474 (variant title on roller); Gee Sporting Panoramas 3; Schwerdt III, p. 2.
