ALKEN, Henry, illustrator -- [SURTEES, Robert Smith (1803-1864)]. Jorrocks's Jaunts and Jollities . London: Rudolph Ackermann 1843.
ALKEN, Henry, illustrator -- [SURTEES, Robert Smith (1803-1864)]. Jorrocks's Jaunts and Jollities . London: Rudolph Ackermann 1843. 8° (211 x 135mm). Hand-coloured aquatint frontispiece, hand-coloured engraved additional title and 13 hand-coloured aquatint plates, by and after Alken. With the suppressed plate, a hand-coloured portrait of Jorrocks, drawn and etched by Alken, loosely inserted. Publisher’s 8-page advertisements at end. (Small adhesive tape repair to front free endpaper, a few isolated spots, occasional light soiling.) Original green cloth, gilt-stamped cartouche of sporting trophies on front cover, gilt spine, gilt edges; green and brown morocco pull-off case by the Lakeside Press, Chicago (case sunfaded). Provenance : Joseph Widener (bookplate; purchased in his sale, 28 November 1944). WIDENER COPY OF THE SECOND EDITION, 'THE MOST VALUABLE ON ACCOUNT OF ALKEN'S SUPERB ILLUSTRATIONS' states Schwerdt who adds that the 'portrait of the celebrated Mr. Jorrocks ... was withdrawn from publication and is rarely met with.’ Ray agrees that 'this book attracted little notice when it appeared in 1838 with illustrations by Phiz, but Alken's aquatints made it a sporting favourite.' Though comparatively small, the plates are replete with detail and brilliantly coloured. Ray 47; Schwerdt II, pp. 236-237 and plate 133. [ With :] SEVEN ORIGINAL DRAWINGS BY ALKEN on tracing paper, the reverse images of the engravings, each 160 x 101mm., window-mounted and contained in morocco-backed clamshell case. The tracings correspond to the plates opposite pp. 108, 142 (torn with slight loss), 147, 195, 249, 308, and 358. Spitz described them as: ‘engraver’s tracings,’ and according to his notes ‘All of these drawings were lifted from original Whatman paper.' However, they are without doubt in the hand of Henry Alken
