ALEXANDER HEPBURNE MACKLIN (1889-1967) A collection of 9 autograph manuscripts and typescripts (mostly with annotations) for talks and papers on the use and care of dogs in polar exploration (5 papers), medical aspects of polar exploration (2 papers), 'Scurvy. A system of Prevention for a Polar Expedition based on present-day knowledge' (paper jointly-written with Hussey, c.1921), and 'Animal Life in the Antarctic' (talk given at Dunfermline Rotary Club, 24 May 1928), altogether approximately 71½ pages, various sizes, in autograph, and 52 pages, various sizes, typescript . PROVENANCE: Alexander Hepburne Macklin (1889-1967), and thence by descent to the present owners. A collection of talks and papers written in the years after his Antarctic experiences, exploring particular aspects of Antarctic life of interest to Macklin. The Endurance expedition was the first British expedition to use dogs in a systematic manner: Macklin, though wholly inexperienced, was closely involved with the dogs not only as a driver but also de facto vet, and his interest, widely evident in his diary, is also evinced in a series of articles here, which describe the principles of selection, care and driving of dogs, illustrated with a series of anecdotes drawn from the Endurance expedition. Scurvy too was a particular interest -- the Endurance party avoided scurvy through their enforced fresh meat diet after leaving the ship; the joint article with Hussey, evidently written during the period of preparation for the Quest expedition, surveys the current state of scientific knowledge and makes a series of recommendations for any future Antarctic party.
