ALBERT, Prince Consort of Queen Victoria of England (1819-1861). Printed document signed, 15 October 1851, certifying that Her Majesty's Commissioners have awarded a medal to the Earl of Romney for services rendered to the Great Exhibition, beneath an engraved allegorical image after W. Dyce (closed tear at bottom). 2 o broadside . Prince Albert, President of the Commissioners and the organizer of the Great Exhibition, "had overcome the massive indifference of the government and the vociferous opposition of that large class of people who are always against any new project merely because it is new... in 1848 Prince Albert submitted a proposal to the government for a self-supporting exhibition of British industrial projects, under the direction of a Royal Commission. He encountered lethargy rather than opposition, and when at last a few ministers were sufficiently roused to consider such a scheme they could only see and magnify the difficulties" (John Gloag, introduction to The Crystal Palace Exhibition Illustrated Catalogue , reprinted by Dover, 1970, pp. v-vi). Prince Albert perservered, however, and established the World's Fair as an international phenomenon.
