Lot of 16 documents, ranging in size from approx. 4.125 x 6.5 in. to 8 x 12.5 in., recommending various Alabama citizens for state service, ca spring 1861. The majority of these letters and petitions are handwritten and addressed to Alabama Governor Andrew B. Moore (1807-1873). Several letters mention the seizure of Fort Pickens in Pensacola, FL. Highlights include a letter written by Democratic senator and novelist Jeremiah Clemens (1814-1865) to Moore accepting the appointment of "Major General in the service of the Independent state of Alabama," 1p, "Montgomery," March 11, 1861. A staunch Unionist, Clemens resigned his commission the following year because of his political opposition to Secession. Also with a number of surgeons' appointments and recommendations, including William H. Baptist's appointment of Dr. Nichols (March 1861), J.G. Michael's appointment of Dr. Reese (March 1861), Sergeant Napoleon Lockett's, 7th Alabama Cavalry, appointment for Dr. R.T. Roston to Fort Pickens (March 1861), T.M. Walthall's recommendation of Dr. Reynolds (April 1861), F.A. Bates offering his surgical services to Moore (April 1861), and R.D. Jackson volunteering himself as a surgeon to Governor John Gill Shorter, Moore's successor (April 1862). Lot also includes a letter written by Shorter to Moore concerning the appointment of Henry M. Barksdale, Co. F., 1st Alabama Infantry (February 1861), along with a petition to Moore for Alabama congressman Sydenham Moore (1817-1862) as major general (February 1861). The undersigned citizens of Marion describe Rep. Moore as a man of "sterling integrity. . . and amply qualified for the duties of the position." Moore, who had prior military experience in the Mexican-American War, eventually organized and led the 11th Alabama Infantry in the regiment's first major action at the Battle of Seven Pines, May 31-June 1, 1862. He was wounded twice during this engagement and died at a field hospital near Richmond, VA. Condition: Condition varies and includes creasing, toning, and light surface soil.
