Beschreibung:

After Gilbert Stuart (Massachusetts/England, 1755-1828) Portrait of Prosperous Plantation Owner, John Campbell (c. 1756-1817). Unsigned. Oil on canvas, 42 x 29 in., in a later molded giltwood frame. Condition: Restored. Note: This portrait is a copy of a work by Gilbert Stuart depicting John Campbell a Jamaica-born sugar plantation owner, who held property outside New York City called Phil's Hill, and also property in Clifton, New Jersey. The original painting of Campbell by Stuart descended in the family, was gifted to the New York Public Library, and sold at auction at Sotheby's, New York, November 30, 2005. In Gilbert Stuart An Illustrated Descriptive List of His Works, by Lawrence Park 1926, pp. 200-201, a brief reference is made to a known copy of the Stuart portrait by an artist named C.B. Moulton, about whom little can be found. It's possible that the present work may have been painted by Gilbert Stuart's youngest daughter Jane Stuart (1812-1888), a talented portraitist, who often copied her father's works.
