After Frans van Mieris,
Dutch 1635-1681-
A woman standing before a mirror;
oil on panel, 33.4 x 27.6 cm. (unframed).
Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
The present work appears to be a copy, in reverse, after Van Mieris's original, which is held in the Leiden Collection [FM-121]. The theme of a lady at her toilette is one that often featured in the paintings of Van Mieris and his contemporaries, such as Gerard ter Borch (1617-1681) and Gabriel Metsu 1629-1667). This subject allowed these artists to exhibit their significant technical proficiency, particularly in the depiction of a range of surfaces and fabrics, from the shimmer of satin and pearls to the fur and velvet of the lady's cape, and the weave of the carpet on the table.
