After Edward William Godwin an ebonised Aesthetic Movement Anglo Japanese coffee or occasional table in the Egyptian style, circa 1875, the square top supported on turned legs with dowel stretchers and triangular dowel gallery below a low shelf, unmarked, 43cm square, 66cm high Note: the original design was produced by William Watt and Collinson and Locke, inspired by historical Ancient Egyptian and Greek furniture. The simplicity of design was also influenced by the new appreciation of hygiene and cleanliness in the home, a reaction against heavily carved and upholstered furniture popular in preceding decades. See: Weber Soros, S. 1999, Secular Furniture of E W Godwin, p.143, for examples of this design.
