Account of a Voyage to the Western Coast of Africa...in 1805, 9 aquatint plates, 3 folding, plates with light marginal foxing, modern morocco-backed cloth, cloth very slightly marked, Richard Phillips 1807 § Riley (James) Loss of the American Brig Commerce, wrecked on the Western Coast of Africa, in...1815. With an account of Tombuctoo, and of the hitherto undiscovered great city of Wassanah, first English edition, folding engraved map, title a little spotted and soiled, light foxing, staining to lower margin of a few leaves, upper hinge broken, original boards, uncut, rubbed and marked, rebacked, spine torn, 1817, 8vo & 4to (2) ⁂ The first work includes references to slavery; the second concerns the shipwreck of an American ship and the crew's resulting appalling hardship, firstly on a trek through the Sahara desert and then through their capture and enslavement by Arabs. On his release the author dedicated himself to campaigning against slavery. This account was a great influence on Abraham Lincoln and his ideas on slavery.
