JOHN QUINCY ADAMS'S FIRST STATE OF THE UNION ADDRESS. Nine months after winning election as President, Adams delivers a lengthy and very detailed annual message to Congress. In the troubled 1824 election, no candidate won a majority and the election was therefore thrown into the House. In the end, Henry Clay threw his support to Adams; but when he named Clay--to whom he owed his election--to be Secretary of State, Jackson supporters were convinced a "corrupt bargain" had been made between them. His wide-ranging review of the situation of the nation embraces foreign policy, internal improvements, tariff issues and national defense. This broadside is most likely the first newspaper printing, by Washington's quasi-official National Intelligencer .
