ACKERMANN, Rudolph (1764–1834), designer and publisher. Modeles de Desseins de Differentes Voitures Angloises . London: J.C. Stadler (1st series), R. Ackermann (3rd to 4th series), 1791-93-95-97. Series 1-4 in one volume, oblong 2º. 48 numbered hand-coloured, deckle-edged aquatint plates, 12 in each series, those in the first series by and after Ackermann, and aquatinted by J.C. Stadler, those in the later series unattributed but presumably by and after Ackerman or executed under his supervision, the 1795-97 series with moveable flaps, the 1797 series accompanied by 4pp. of letterpress describing the designs and advertisement slip, sheet size 215 x 312mm. (Occasional light soiling, one plate in series 2 browned.) Bound with 4 larger hand-coloured etchings by Ackermann, heightened with silver, each showing two horses in full harness held by a groom, signed and inscribed in ink, 250 x 450mm. Contemporary red boards, upper cover titled in French as above. Provenance : purchased from Nicholas Rauch, 1947. A VOLUME OF EXQUISITE ARTISTRY BY ACKERMANN AS COACH DESIGNER, containing four of the thirteen books of designs for carriages which he published between 1791 and 1820, with four prints in larger format displaying coach harnesses, possibly extracted from his Book of Harness. At the age of fifteen Ackermann was apprenticed to his elder brother Friedrich, a saddler; it was during this period that he also learned to draw and engrave. In 1782 he left Schneeberg to train as a carriage designer, first in Dresden and then at Hueningen, in Switzerland. In 1784 he travelled to Paris where he was employed for six months by the celebrated carriage maker Antoine Carassi. He worked for the carriage making firm of Simons in Brussels in 1785–6 before arriving in England in 1787, aged twenty-three. His model of a state coach for the carriage maker Goodall led to his first important commission. He designed a state coach for George Washington in America, and an innovative security mail coach which ran between Charing Cross and Greenwich.
