Engraved throughout, a complete suite of copper-engraved proofs comprising: title, 1l. alphabet sheet with vignette; 1l. with two educational prints, 1l. a pictorial alphabet, 1l. the solar system, and 27ll. with exquisite designs illustrating the complete alphabet (including a second letter "G"), each captioned with two lines of verse starting with the appropriate letter, extra-illustrated with a single leaf "Kunstplaaten van het Vaderlandsch A-B Boek. Proefdruk" (6 3/8 x 8 5/8 inches, mounted too size). Unbound, as issued (?), in early plain paper-covered pasteboard with vellum spine and corners. Condition : light damp-staining in the margins of most of the engravings; covers rubbed and stained. a lovely and very rare series of proof engravings for this important dutch alphabet book for children . The series of small alphabet engravings are particularly fine. This copy not only includes proofs of the engravings but is also considerably larger than the usual published edition, which is approximately 8.85 x 4.9inches. Also included are a letterpress 9-page folio proposal (13 x 8 inches) dated 26 September 1781 signed in ink by Swildens, and an 8-page 12mo prospectus (6 1/2 x 4 1/8 inches), both for the published book.
