A Very Rare Zitan and Gilt-Lacquered Figure of Shakyamuni Tibeto-Chinese, Yongle Nine Character Mark and Period (1403-24) The figure finely carved with the right hand held in varada mudra , the left hand raised holding the tip of his robe, the hair arranged in rows of tightly curled cones surmounted by the domed usnisa , the face with a serene expression with downcast eyes, wearing a voluminous robe falling from his left shoulder and gathered in undulating folds at the hem, with patterns of stylized clouds outlined in gold, the face and parts of the exposed body gilded with details highlighted in colored pigments, the back with a sealed oval aperture for consecration, the lotus base incised Da Ming Yongle nian yu gong jing zao (Respectfully made for the altar in the Great Ming Yongle), the base carved with overlapping lotus petals outlined with cinnabar lacquer 13 1/8 in. (33.2 cm.) high
