A VERY RARE IMPERIAL CELADON JADE BOOK OF THE SIXTEEN LUOHAN QIANLONG PERIOD (1736-1795) Comprising eight rectangular plaques, incised and gilded on either side to depict a total of sixteen luohan , each depiction accompanied by a four-column poetic inscription in clerical script describing the various pursuits of each figure, and the last leaf signed, chen Yuan Shou Tong jing shu , followed by two seals, chen Tong , the semi-translucent stone of even, pale greyish-green tone, all bordered by Imperial-yellow silk mounts, mounted as a book with finely carved sandalwood covers, the front cover carved with a pair of descending five-clawed dragons confronting a flaming pearl and centering a vertical rectangular cartouche inscribed Yu Zhi Shiliu Luohan zan (By Imperial Command: In Praise of the Sixteen Luohan), the inscription filled in with dark blue pigment, the scene set against a dense ground of swirling clouds and above a central rocky outcropping emerging from crashing waves, the back cover with a similar scene but with a single front-faced five-clawed dragon pursuing a flaming pearl 5 3/8 x 3¾ in. (13.6 x 9.6 cm.), with original brocade covered and yellow silk-lined hardboard folding box
