A VERY RARE BRONZE RITUAL WINE VESSEL AND COVER, YOU MIDDLE WESTERN ZHOU DYNASTY, 10TH CENTURY BC Of elliptical profile, the bulging belly, neck and domed cover finely cast in relief with pairs of confronted birds with bulbous eyes, unusual bound crests and long tails with elaborate feathers, all reserved on leiwen grounds, with two small animal masks dividing the band on the neck, the ends of the cover cast with split scrolls that rise up into projecting tabs, or beaks, flanking the finial cast on top with a similar bird, the arched handle with animal mask terminals and cast with simplified, elongated dragons, with a ten-character inscription cast inside the vessel and cover, with areas of golden patina and malachite, azurite and reddish-brown encrustation 11½ in. (29.2 cm.) high with handle
