A Superb and Colourful Mokko -shaped Kogo With Tray Meiji Period (19th Century) The cover decorated with the figure of a court lady of the Heian period seated on a dais in front of a curtain-screen, holding a brush and some paper in her hands, a suzuribako lying open on the floor beside an elbow-rest upon which lies a partly open court fan, varying shades of gold and red, together with patinated silver dust and black combine to an unusually colourful effect, given the limited palette available to the lacquer artist, the effect heightened by many lacquer techniques, including kinji , heidatsu , kirikane , togidashie , e-nashiji , ginpun , kinpun and takamakie in many colours of red, gold and silver, the sides of the box and cover decorated with patches of variously patterned brocades in similar colours, but lower relief, the tray decorated in hiramakie , takamakie and kirikane with the exterior of a palace and its garden, the edge of the tray decorated with flower fronds in hiramakie , the underside nashiji , the risers of the box togidashie , with peony leaves on a Gyobu ground, the interior of the box and cover similarly decorated, with the addition of peony blooms in gold and silver usuniku-takamakie 1.5/8 x 3.7/8 x 3.1/8in. (4.3 x 9.9 x 7.9cm.)
