A STORE FRONT NATIVE AMERICAN A circa 1900s store front Native America statue commissioned by store proprietors for advertising purposes at the entrances or sidewalks of the shop. In order to protect the trade signs from vandalism and wear, these statues were customarly built on bases with wheels and brought into the store at night. By 1915, most cities obtained ordinances which forbade the use of these great statues, claiming they were detrimental in emegency situations. Their popularity faded, and due to cumbersome storage, most were destroyed by the 1920s. This white pine Chief tradesign appears in his full head dress, hand painted in earthtone colors, hand carved by method of chisel and mallot. The base of the statue is cracked-- 7 feet tall.
