A square piano by Broadwood, London, 1787 The mahogany case cross-banded with satinwood and inlaid with rope-twist stringing, raised on a frame stand veneered en suite, brass castors and paterae. Shelf underneath. The keywell cross-banded in maple with geometric stringing, the nameboard bearing the inscription: Johannes Broadwood Londini Fecit 1787 Patent, Great Pulteney Street Golden Square. The five octave keyboard FF–f3 with ivory naturals and ebony accidentals. English single action with brass under-dampers. Bearing a paper label in English and French on the inside of the spine giving instruction on how to deal with keys that stick and dampers that rattle. Serial number 762 Width 158cm, depth 54cm, case height including lid 24cm. Literature: The Colt Clavier Collection Golden Jubilee 1944–1981, p. 22, (61) S335B.
