A set of six George III polychrome decorated dining chairsCirca 1785, after a design by Gillows Each painted with ribbon-tied flowers and ribbon-tied floral pendants, acanthus, husks and rosettes, the shield shaped back with a foliate capped five spindle splat, the spindles terminating in a demi-lune sunflower-head, on square tapering front legs with baluster shaped knop collars, on slightly splayed square section rear legs, re-decoration to some surfaces, each chair approximately: 97cm wide x 42cm deep x 50cm high, (38in wide x 16 1/2in deep x 19 1/2in high) (6)FootnotesA chair design, dated circa 1785, which is identical to those in the present set of chairs is illustrated in Gillow Furniture Designs, 1760-1800, introduction and ed. by L. Boynton, 1995, Royston, fig. 260. An almost identical drawing, albeit of slightly cruder execution, appears in S. Stuart, Gillows of Lancaster and London, 1730-1840, Vol. I, 2008, Woodbridge, fig. 1, p.134. This latter example is evidently one of a group of reproductions, also dating to circa 1785, taken from the "Journeymen's Price Agreement" which is therein described as: 'Camel Back Stay Rail, 5 splat escutcheon or shield'.Saleroom noticesThe correct measurements for each of the offered chairs is actually: 50cm wide x 42cm deep x 97cm high.
