A Selection of the Eatable Funguses of Great Britain Author: Hogg, Robert and George W. Johnson, editors Place: London Publisher: Journal of Horticulture & Cottage Gardener Office Date: [1866] Description: [4], vii, [48] pp. With 24 hand-colored lithograph plates, tissue guards. (8vo) 21.7x14 cm (8½x5½"), original red cloth decoratively stamped and lettered in gilt, decorative gilt borders, top edge gilt, yellow-coated endpapers. First Edition. With laid-in holograph notes from an early owner. Robert Hogg (1818–1897) was a Scottish nurseryman and botanist. He was known as a pomologist who contributed to the science of classification. He published his book British Pomology in 1851, and co-edited The Florist and Pomologist: A Pictorial Monthly Magazine of Flowers, Fruits and General Horticulture. George William Johnson (1802-1886), was a British writer on gardening. Fresh from his success with Muck for the Many, or the Economy of House Sewage, (1860), Johnson co-wrote another book with Hogg entitled The Wild Flowers of Great Britain (1863). Lot Amendments Condition: Rubbing at spine ends with mild fraying, light corner and edgewear; hinges repaired or just starting, one plate with inkstain on reverse (recto) not affecting illustration; very good.
