A SECOND WORLD WAR AND LATER GROUP OF SIX AND SWORD TO JOSEPH PALMER. A Second World War and later group comprising 1939-45 and Atlantic Stars, War Medal with Mentioned in Despatches Oak leaf, all unnmaed as issued, Korea medal named to 'CDR J.M. Palmer R.N.' United Nations Korea Medal and Naval General Service Medal 1909-1962 with Near East clasp named to CDR J.M. Palmer R.N.' Mounted court style as worn, with accompanying miniatures and two sets of ribbon bars. With Commander Palmer's sword and scabbard by Matthew's and Company of Portsmout, with a 79cm decorated blade marked 'Matthews Portsea' with gilt guard, fishskin grip and sword knot, engraved J.M. PALMER R.N. to the folding catch, with scabbard and leather travelling cover with a paper label 'Commander J.M. Palmer C.N.I. Dept Admiralty. London' and crossed out 'c/o Flag Officer Malayan Area, Singapore''. Also with folding pocket knife with spike and 7.5cm blade marked 'J.M. Palmer', Junior Car Club medal from Brooklands Rally 1935 to J.M.Palmer (Singer), government issue whistle with chain and identity tag Lieutenant J.M. Palmer Royal Navy C of E', an 'Arctic Convoy Veternas 1941-45' Plaque presented to J.M. Palmer (Capt) 1945-46 H.M.S. Zambesi' with a label to the reverse 'Presented to Commander J.M. Palmer as a token of our regard for the Skipper of a Happy Ship. From the remaining Ship's Company At Hawkchurch Devon 31st October '92', and an unrelated pair of First World War miniatures. Joseph Mansergh Palmer (1912-1999) joined the Navy as a Cadet on the 1st of September 1929, he was appointed Lieutenant on the 1st April 1934, Lt Commander from 1st April 1942 and Commander from the 31st Decemebr 1946. During the Second World War he commanded three ships HMS Aldenham an Escort Destroyer from 18th November 1941-23rd March 1942, HMS Eglinton a similar vessel from 16th May 1942 until and 21st February 1944 and HMS Zambesi a Destroyer from the 10th March 1945 until late 1946. He retired on the 26th April 1962. He was awarded his Mention for 'action with E Boats in Nore area' in February 1944. Joseph Palmer is illustrated, when a Lieutenant Commander in a group photograph, plate 39, page 238, in 'Last Convoy of SS. Henry Bacon by Foxvog and Alotta from 2001. This volume charts the last journey of one of the 'Liberty Ships' or freighter on its last journey. Palmer is seen amongst a group of 'Commanding officers of the Second Destroyer Flotilla 1946'. For the set of six Victorian and Later medals to his Father see the proceeding lot. Sold by a direct descendant of the recipient.
