A Saxon Hunting Cleaver Early 17th Century With spatulate blunt-ended single-edged blade struck on each face with a mark, one a lion rampant (?), and etched on one face with the arms of Saxony impaling the crossed swords of the Archmarshalship of the Holy Roman Empire, the back stamped 'G T Aug...', iron hilt with single fore-quillon shaped as a stylised monster's head engraved with foliage, and small side-ring, staghorn grip-scales held by rivets with domed brass heads engraved with the same arms as the blade, and iron pommel chiselled as a monster's head 18¾in. (47.6cm.) The inscription on the back of the blade may refer to the Elector August I (1553-1586)
