A Richly Decorated Suzuribako [Box for Writing Utensils] Meiji Period (Late 19th Century) With overhanging lid, straight sides and square corners, the exterior black-lacquer ground sprinkled with gold hirame sprinkled in mura-nashiji , decorated in very high-relief gold, silver and coloured takamaki-e and togidashi-e with gold kirikane depicting an eagle flying with a sparrow in its talons, with a flowering plant in the foreground and a stream in the background, the sides decorated in gold hirame and the base in gold nashiji , the interior of the lid with a flying crane in similar techniques and materials on a rich gold nashiji ground, the interior of the lid with the same ground, sparsely decorated in gold hiramaki-e and abise-maki with bamboo, the base-board holding an inkstone ( fundame rim) and a plain bronze waterdropper with a six-character inscription, slight old damage, with silk storage bag 1 15/16 x 9½ x 8 5/8in. (5.0 x 24.2 x 22.0cm.)
